Robert Triffin, a Belgian-American scholar and policy advisor, was a defining voice in economics and international politics in the twentieth century. He is best known for his analysis of the vulnerabilities of the international monetary system—the “Triffin dilemma”—, but he also played a key role in the debates on European monetary integration, especially as the monetary advisor of Jean Monnet. With his proposals for a European Reserve Fund and a European currency unit, he became one of the intellectual fathers of Europe's single currency, the euro.
This intellectual biography evaluates what made Triffin a crucial figure in modern economic history. With an emphasis on the ideas that shaped the postwar international system, Robert Triffin: A Life explores both the man and the mission. In addition to analyzing his work in economics and policymaking, Ivo Maes and Ilaria Pasotti trace Triffin's story from a very modest background, as the son of a butcher in Flobecq, who grew up through the interwar period, to a singularly influential economist in the late twentieth century.
“Robert Triffin: A Life” received the 2022 Best Book Award of AISPE, the Italian society for the History of Economic Thought.
Eric De Keuleneer Professor at the ULB Solvay Brussels School and Executive Director, University Foundation. He has published on various subjects including capital markets, energy markets, corporate governance and social responsibility of enterprises. In addition to his academic expertise, Prof. De Keuleneer has an extensive professional track-record. Until 2018, he was Chief Executive Officer of OCCH, Brussels (Office Central de Crédit Hypothécaire; state owned bank), since 2001 renamed Credibe. He was the Director of Corporate and Investment Banking at the ‘Generale Bank’ Brussels and Head of Syndication and Trading at Kredietbank Luxembourg. He is a member of various Boards in the private sector and the non-profit sector.
Ivo Maes is a Professor, Robert Triffin Chair, at the Université catholique de Louvain, as well as at ICHEC Brussels Management School. He was Senior Advisor at the Economics and Research Department of the National Bank of Belgium. He previously served as a member of the Committee for Institutional Reform of the West African Monetary Union and as the President of the Council of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought. He has been a visiting professor at Duke University (USA), the Université de Paris-Sorbonne, and the Università Roma Tre.
Jacques de Larosière was Director of the French Treasury, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Governor of the Banque de France and President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. In 1988-89, he was a member of the Delors Committee, a crucial stepping stone in Europe’s economic and monetary union project. In 2008-2009, he became the President of the so-called “de Larosière Committee”, which was at the heart of a profound reform of the institutional architecture of financial supervision in the European Union. His latest book is « En finir avec le règne de l’illusion financière » (Odile Jacob).
Elena Flores is Deputy-Director General at the Directorate General for Economic and Financial Affairs of the European Commission, where she is responsible for International and Investment. Since she joined DG ECFIN, Ms. Flores has held several senior management positions, including Director for International economic and financial relations, global governance (2015-2021); Director for Policy Strategy and Coordination (2011 – 2015); Director for Economies and Member States II (2007 – 2009). Between 1999 and 2002, Ms. Flores served as Advisor in Commissioner Solbes’ office, responsible for economic policies, employment, taxation and financial issues.
Francesco Papadia is a Senior Fellow at Bruegel and Chair of Prime Collateralised Securities and of the Selection Panel of the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund. He was Director General for Market Operations at the ECB from 1998 to 2012. Before he worked at the Research Department of the Banca d’Italia. From 1980 to 1983 he was an Economic Adviser at the European Commission. His latest books are “The Value of Money” (co-editor, Villa Vigoni Verlag) and “Central Banking in Turbulent Times” (Oxford University Press).
In 2022 startte de Universitaire Stichting een nieuwe reeks debatten onder de titel “Speakers’ Corner”, In deze debatten krijgen sprekers uit het Verenigd Koninkrijk en uit de Europese Unie een platform om ons, in het hart van de Europese Unie, hun visie te geven over de relaties tussen het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de EU en over de EU in het algemeen, en om met ons in debat te gaan. De recente activiteit in dit kader ging door op 15 mei 2023 om 18 u, met als onderwerp "The UK and the EU in a changing world. Time for a new departure?". Panelisten: Professor Anand Menon (King’s College London), Andy Bounds (Financial Times) en Stefaan De Rynck (Head of the Commission representation in Belgium and former senior adviser to BREXIT negotiator Michel Barnier). Moderator is Paul Adamson, chairman of the UK/EU Forum. Afsluitende overwegingen worden geformuleerd door Jim Cloos, SG of TEPSA and Senior Associate Fellow of the Egmont Institute. Topic of the debate
The new agreement to resolve the tensions surrounding the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol - the so-called “Windsor Framework” - sets the scene for a more cordial EU-UK relationship after almost seven years of uncertainty and acrimony in the wake of the 2016 ‘Brexit’ referendum.
This debate will examine to what extent it is realistic to envisage a ’new era’ in EU-UK relations, where the most important areas of cooperation and collaboration lie, and what should be a longer term strategy for building on this new momentum.
Presentation of the speakers
Anand Menon is Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at Kings College London. He also directs the UK in a Changing Europe project (www.ukandeu.ac.uk). His areas of research interest include the policies and institutions of the European Union, European security, and British politics. He contributes regularly to both print and broadcast media. He is co-editor of the Oxford Handbook of the European Union (OUP, 2012), and co-author of Brexit and British Politics (Polity 2018). He is a trustee of Full Fact a member of the Strategic Council of the European Policy Centre, a Council member of the European Council on Foreign Relations and an associate fellow of Chatham House. Andy Bounds is the EU correspondent covering Brexit, trade and agriculture, for The Financial Times. He is also Netherlands correspondent. Andy Bounds has worked for the Financial Times since 1997. He covered the Brexit vote in the UK as Northern correspondent and was previously posted in Brussels from 2004-08.
Stefaan De Rynck heads the European Commission’s Representation in Belgium, creating a bridge between the EU’s executive and Belgian politics and society. His experience in EU affairs and public policies covers transport, sustainable urban development, regulation of financial services, and the single market. From 2016 until 2021, he was a senior advisor for the Brexit negotiations conducted by Michel Barnier. De Rynck teaches on EU governance at the University of Leuven (KUL) and published “Inside the deal. How the EU got Brexit done” (2023)
Jim Cloos is a former Deputy Director General for General and Institutional Policy at the General Secretariat of the EU Council of Ministers. Between 2001 and 2006, he was a close collaborator of High Representative Javier Solana.
From 1995 to 1999, he was Head of Cabinet to the President of the European Commission and his G7/8 Sherpa. Between 1993 and 1995, he headed the Cabinet of the Commissioner in charge of agriculture.
Jim is the Secretary General of TEPSA – the Trans European Policy Study Association, and a Senior Associate Fellow in the European Affairs Programme of the Egmont Institute.
Paul Adamson OBE is chairman of Forum Europe and Forum Global and founder of Encompass an online magazine and discussion space dedicated to covering the European Union and the UK’s place in the world. He is also the chairman of the EU-UK Forum and a member of the Independent Commission on UK-EU Relations.

In aansluiting bij de avondvoordracht over "Kernfusie" organiseerden we van dinsdag 2 mei (of woensdag 3 mei) 2023 tot zaterdag 6 mei (of zondag 7 mei) 2023 een reis naar Aix-en Provence, waarbij we cultuur (stadswandelingen, bezoeken aan musea, de streek, muziek, …), wetenschap (bezoek aan de kernfusiereactor ITER ("International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor”) o.l.v. prof. Jef Ongena en andere specialisten ter plaatse) en convivialiteit (met onder ander een lunch in Cadarache met de leden van de KVAB, die deze reis parallel doen) aan bod kwamen. We reizen met de TGV en logeren in Aix-en-Provence.
Cadarache (Provence)
ITER is een internationaal samenwerkingsproject met als doel de wetenschappelijke en technische haalbaarheid aan te tonen van kernfusie als energiebron op aarde. Deze fusiemachine ITER is uitgerust met supergeleidende magneetspoelen, gekoeld met vloeibaar Helium tot ongeveer 4K of -269ºC. De laatste grote constructiefase is nu in volle gang: het plaatsen van de 16 grote magneetspoelen (8m hoog en 4m breed) van deze fusiemachine. Als laatste stap zullen deze spoelen worden omgeven door een grote cryostaat, hetgeen naar verwachting eind volgend jaar/ begin 2024 zou kunnen plaatsvinden. Om de interne details van de machine te zien, is een bezoek volgend jaar een noodzaak.
ITER is gebouwd met als doel een vermogen van 500 MW op te wekken, een output van dezelfde orde van grootte als die van de kleinere centrales Doel-1 en Doel-2, maar dan opgewekt uit fusiereacties en niet uit splijtingsreacties. De machine is ontworpen om te werken bij temperaturen van 150 miljoen graad, tienmaal zo heet als het centrum van onze zon, bij een warmteflux aan de rand (~ 10WM/m2), vergelijkbaar met de warmteflux aan het oppervlak van de zon, en is 100 miljoen maal kleiner dan de zon. Het is duidelijk dat dit een enorme uitdaging is, maar absoluut nodig om onze energietoekomst voor te bereiden.

ITER is gelegen naast Cadarache, een groot onderzoekscentrum voor atoomenergie van de Franse gouvernementele organisatie CEA (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives) in de gemeente Saint-Paul-lèz-Durance in de Provence, Frankrijk.
Op woensdag 19 april 2023 te 17 u. gaven dr. Sabine van Sprang, directrice Academia Belgica, en Prof. Tine Meganck, Professor aan de Vrije Universiteit Brussel, een lezing (N/F) over de relatie van de Vlaamse schilder Pieter Bruegel en Italië, dit naar aanleiding van het verschijnen van het boek "BRUEGEL & L’ITALIA / BRUEGEL AND ITALY", dat het resultaat is van de wetenschappelijke bijeenkomst gehouden aan de Academia Belgica te Rome in 2019. De lezing werd gevolgd door een hapje en een drankje.
Inhoud van de voordracht
In 2019, in herdenking van de dood van Pieter Bruegel 450 jaar geleden, wijdde de Academia Belgica een internationaal symposium aan Bruegel en Italië. De akten van deze wetenschappelijke bijeenkomst zijn thans gepubliceerd in het meest recente volume van de Acta Academiae Belgicae. Hoewel Bruegel ongeveer twee jaar in het schiereiland verbleef, is er opmerkelijk weinig van zijn Italiaanse artistieke productie bewaard en is de impact van Bruegels ontmoeting met Italië niet meteen merkbaar in zijn oeuvre. Waarom trok Bruegel dan naar Italië? Om mogelijke antwoorden te formuleren, beschouwen de auteurs niet alleen de meester en zijn werk, maar ook de culturele en artistieke uitwisseling tussen Italië en de Lage Langen voor, tijdens en na zijn Italiaanse reis. Zij traceren de condities, tradities en netwerken die Bruegels dialoog met Italië motiveerden en vormgaven, en openen zo nieuwe paden in het onderzoek van deze befaamde, maar zeer ongedocumenteerde kunstenaar.

Dr. Sabine van Sprang
Directrice Academia Belgica
Sabine van Sprang was born in Ghent in 1966. She has obtained a Master degree in Philosophy and Literature (major: Art History and Archeology) from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. She has been working as a curator of 16th and 17th century Flemish painting at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels since 1996.
In 2006, she defended her PhD thesis at the Université Libre de Bruxelles on the Brussels painter Denijs van Alsloot (c. 1568 – 1625/26) of which a revised version in two volumes has been published by Brepols in 2014 in the series Pictura Nova, Studies in the 16th- and 17th- Century Flemish Painting and Drawing (ed. by Prof. Katlijne Van der Stighelen and Prof. Hans Vlieghe). In 2007, in cooperation with Joost Vander Auwera, she organized the exhibition Rubens, a Genius at Work at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts (catalogue in E/FR/N) and in 2012 she curated the exhibition Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens et les autres, Peintures baroques flamandes aux Musées royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belgique / Flemish Baroque Paintings from the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (catalogue in FR-E) at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.
From 2007 to 2017, she coordinated the team at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium that was part of the Belgian-Dutch project City and Society in the Low Countries, 1200-1800: Space, Knowledge, Social Capital, conducted by Professor Marc Boone from the University of Ghent (financed by the Interuniversity Attraction Poles Program-Belgian Science Policy). Together with Prof. Tine Meganck, she edited the book Bruegel’s Winter Scenes, Historians and Art Historians in Dialogue (Mercatorfonds, 2018, published in E/FR/N/D), to which several members of the project contributed.
A the same time, Sabine van Sprang curated the first monographic exhibition ever on the Brussels painter Theodoor van Loon (1581/82-1649) (Brussels, Bozar, 9.10.2018-15.01.2019 ; Luxemburg, Musée national d'histoire et d'art, 15.02.2019- 26.05.2019 ; catalogue in Fr/N).
In January 2019, she was appointed director of the Academia Belgica, Centre for the History, the Arts and Sciences in Rome for four years, a term that has been extended for one year (until December 2023).
Tine L. Meganck
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Tine Luk Meganck is Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. After her Master in Art History at UGent (1993) and Master in Business Administration at the Vlerick School of Management (1994), she obtained a PhD in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University in 2003. She subsequently joined the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium with a Return Grant of the Federal Science Policy of Belgium. As a researcher at the Royal Museums (2005-2019), she revisited the collection’s rich Bruegel and Rubens holdings from a cultural-historical perspective.
More generally, Tine Luk Meganck studies art and visual culture of the early modern Low Countries in a global context. Her research interests include interactions between artists, merchants and humanists; antiquarianism; ethnography and the representation of the other; art and knowledge, and, most recently, the artistic participation of early modern merchant families and the representation of early modern family life.
Her publications include, among others, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Fall of the Rebel Angels: Art, Knowledge and Politics on the Eve of the Dutch Revolt (2014), Erudite Eyes: Friendship, Art and Erudition in the Network of Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) (2017); Bruegel’s Winter Scenes: Art Historians and Historians in Dialogue (2018 – edited with Sabine van Sprang), and, forthcoming, Bruegel e l’Italia. Bruegel and Italy, editor, Studia Academiae Belgica #3 (2023 - also edited with Sabine van Sprang and in collaboration with Maria Clelia Galassi).
She is editorial board member of Brill Studies in Netherlandish Art and Cultural History (NACH) and of Oud Holland, the oldest surviving art-historical periodical in the world. Since 2022 she is member of the Board of Historians of Netherlandish Art.

De celliste Stéphanie HUANG
Stéphanie Huang werd in 2021 uitverkoren tot een van de revelaties van de Franse talentenjacht ADAMI Classique. Ze begon op zeer jonge leeftijd cello te spelen bij haar moeder. Op 12-jarige leeftijd maakte ze haar debuut in het Koninklijk Munttheater in Brussel met Tsjaikovski’s Variaties op een Rococothema voor cello en orkest. Ze studeerde aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Brussel bij Jeroen Reuling en aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse in Parijs bij Marc Coppey en Emmanuelle Bertrand. Ze is een laureate van het Dexia Concours, de Suggia International Cello Competition in Porto en de muziekwedstrijd van de Società Umanitaria in Milaan, evenals van de SPES, Meyer en Kriegelstein stichtingen. Ze werd ook geselecteerd voor de Académie musicale Philippe Jaroussky, de Seiji Ozawa International Academy en de Académie musicale de Villecroze. Ze werd onlangs bekroond met de Bourse d’Excellence Patrick Petit. Sinds september 2020 is ze artist-in-residence aan de Muziekkapel Koningin Elisabeth in Waterloo, waar ze bij Gary Hoffman studeert.

Om 14 u : Bezoek (N) aan de fototentoonstelling “Licht uit het Oosten. Licht op het Oosten. Franz Cumont (1868-1947) en de antieke mysterieculten", onder leiding van prof. Danny Praet,.in het Vandenhove Centrum voor Architectuur en Kunst, Rozier 1, Gent.
Bezoek aan de tentoonstelling "Alexandrië: vervlogen toekomsten" onder leiding van de commissarissen Arnaud Quertinmont en Nicolas Amoroso (van het Musée de MARIEMONT) (en F), gevolgd door de lunch in de Universitaire Stichting.
Alexandrië: vervlogen toekomsten blikt terug op de gloriejaren van de antieke grootstad aan de hand van een 200-tal werken uit de grootste Europese museumcollecties. De tentoonstelling werpt een ander licht op Alexandrië en plaatst de stedenbouwkundige, politieke en religieuze organisatie van de stad in de kijker. Ook het dagelijkse leven van de inwoners en de wetenschappelijke en filosofische uitstraling van dit kloppende hart van de antieke beschaving tussen de 4e eeuw v.C en de 4e eeuw n.C. komt aan bod. Een 20-tal hedendaagse werken vult het relaas van de tentoonstelling aan en legt kritische en poëtische verbanden in verschillende zijsprongen die vorm krijgen in een ambitieuze scenografie. Veel van de aangekaarte thema’s worden bovendien verruimd met uitstapjes naar andere periodes, van de Byzantijnse en Arabische hoogdagen tot de moderne tijd, om het beeld van Alexandrië doorheen de geschiedenis nog scherper te stellen.
Mede gefinancierd door het Creative Europe programma van de Europese Unie als onderdeel van het internationale project “Alexandrië: (Re-)activatie van de gemeenschappelijke stedelijke verbeeldingen / Alexandria : (Re)activating Common Urban Imaginaries.

Dinsdag 22 november om 10 uur : Bezoek aan de tentoonstelling Shin Hanga, De nieuwe prenten van Japan (1900-1960), ingeleid door Mevrouw Nathalie Vandeperre, Conservator van de collecties Verre Oosten en Co-commissaris van de tentoonstelling.
Welkom vanaf 9.30 u. aan de hoofdingang van het Museum voor Kunst en geschiedenis, Jubelpark 10, 1000 Brussel.

De tentoonstelling Shin hanga – De nieuwe prenten van Japan 1900-1960 laat het publiek kennismaken met de belangrijkste stroming van de Japanse prentkunst in de 20ste eeuw. Shin hanga prenten zetten in zekere zin de lijn voort van de traditionele prentkunst of ukiyo-e, in het Westen bekend dankzij grote kunstenaars als Hokusai, Utamaro en Hiroshige. Hoewel ze dezelfde techniek van houtdruk hanteren en er ook een aantal klassieke thema’s terugkomen, waaronder de landschappen, de vrouwen- en de acteursprenten, verleiden de shin hanga prenten door een nieuwe esthetiek, hoogstaande materialen en uiterst luxueuze uitvoeringen.
De presentatie geeft een inleiding op het thema aan de hand van prenten uit de tentoonstelling, zodat men vervolgens zelf op eigen tempo de expo kan ontdekken.
Op donderdag 23 juni 2022 organiseerde de "Koninklijke Vereniging voor Politieke Economie van België" in samenwerking met de Universitaire Stichting een debat (N/F) met Prof. Bram De Rock (KULeuven - ULB), in dialoog met Prof. Philippe Van Parijs (UCLouvain), over
"Wat heet dan gelukkig zijn? Een economisch perspectief"
Onderwerp
In de lezing “Wat heet dan gelukkig zijn? Een economisch perspectief” zal prof. De Rock zijn onderzoek nader toelichten en in het bijzonder zal hij focussen op het individueel welzijn van de Belgen. Vooreerst zal hij aangeven dat economen hier wel degelijk een meerwaarde kunnen bieden en dat deze verder reikt dan het in kaart brengen van financiële middelen van gezinnen. Vervolgens zal hij enkele opvallende resultaten bespreken uit het boek “Well-being in Belgium, beyond happiness and income’’ dat hij samen met collegae van vier Belgische universiteiten in 2018 publiceerde.
De spreker
Bram De Rock is gewoon hoogleraar economie bij ECARES (Université libre de Bruxelles), in combinatie met een zelfde positie aan het departement economie van de KU Leuven. Hij heeft tevens gastaanstellingen aan het University College London en het Institute for Fiscal Studies (London). Bram De Rock publiceerde meer dan 60 artikels in internationaal toonaangevende tijdschriften zoals onder andere The American Economic Review en The Journal of Political Economy. In juni 2019, ontving hij, samen met Laurens Cherchye en Frederic Vermeulen, uit de handen van zijne Majesteit de Koning de prestigieuze Francqui prijs in de humane wetenschappen. Dit om het maatschappelijk belang van hun gezamenlijke onderzoeksagenda te onderstrepen.

Philippe Van Parijs, prix Francqui 2001, a dirigé la Chaire Hoover d’éthique économique et sociale de l’UCLouvain de 1991 à 2016. Il est actuellement professeur invité à l’UCLouvain et à la KU Leuven et Robert Schuman Fellow à l’Institut universitaire européen (Florence). Ses livres les plus récents sont Basic Income.
